Chanting the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

Spring 2025

Sunday Online Practice – Chanting the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

Every Sunday online from April 5 | 60 minutes | 9 sessions

This regular Sunday online practice is dedicated to chanting the first chapter (Samādhi Pāda) of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali—the foundational text of classical yoga that describes the path toward calming the mind (citta vṛtti nirodhaḥ), cultivating concentration, and gaining a deeper understanding of consciousness.

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are a collection of concise aphorisms that systematically summarize both the philosophy and practice of yoga. The first chapter focuses on the quality of attention, the meditative state of mind, and the relationship between practice, non-attachment, and inner stability.

Chanting and Its Effects

Chanting the sutras in their original Sanskrit works with sound as a carrier of consciousness. The vibration of the syllables influences the breath, the nervous system, and the ability to concentrate. Regular chanting:

  • supports mental calm and breath regulation
  • harmonizes the nervous system and reduces stress
  • strengthens memory, concentration, and rhythmic awareness
  • cultivates inner stability and gentle anchoring of attention

From the perspective of Hindu philosophy, śabda (sound) is considered a fundamental principle of manifestation. Correctly articulated Sanskrit sound is believed to act on subtle levels and align the mind with deeper layers of being. Contemporary findings in neuroscience also confirm that rhythmic chanting and recitation positively influence brain waves, support parasympathetic activation, and contribute to overall psychological balance.
